Ok, so I have done some hard core googling on ancient civilisations and come up with a few pictures that I think are representative of various ancient civilisations. The images in the mood board represent the ‘bigger picture’, I could realistically fit all the pictures I wanted to in one collage.
Throughout all the civilisations there are several things that appear to remain a constant. Firstly is stone, It is everywhere and has been used to represent all things from basic buildings, to burial chambers and statues of gods. Stone sounds a bit obvious but it is clearly and area that needs to be kept in mind throughout the process of representing an ancient civilisation, It symbolises strength, power and durability (after all it had to survive all those thousand of years after the civilisation was gone). Another thing I have noticed is how proud of their physical power they are and feel the need to constantly remind others of it by showing of muscles, This is quite a valuable insight in to how and why most civilisations dress. Dressing a character is just as important as other aspects such as stance and facial expressions as it helps define a person’s character.
I have not yet decided what civilisation I want to work on but I am edging toward the Mayan / Aztec / Inca side of things. The reason for this is that they are a proud people that commanded respect, I think that with this in mind there is a lot of scope for character exaggeration and drawing out amusing or strong characteristics that children can relate to or identify with.
The thoughts continue.
